DESIGN PARAMETERS 

DESIGN TEAM: 

Maximum 8 people per team. The majority of the team must be Students or Interns in Industrial Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning. The minority may be from another discipline, but all team members must be a Student or Intern. All design team members must reside in Canada and are 18+ years old.

TRANSPORTATION:

Design team must be able to build their design off-site and arrange for proper transportation for installation set-up and take-down at the selected site located in Edmonton, AB. July 2nd reserved for set-up and August 30th will be reserved for take down. Detailed date and time TBD. URB PRK is not responsible for arranging transportation.

ACCOMMODATION:

Design team must arrange their own accommodation if building away from home. URB PRK is not responsible for arranging accommodation.

 

SITE:

Two parallel parking stalls (2.25m width X 10.0m length) located infront of 10844 82 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta. The area is on the quieter end of a pedestrian heavy Whyte Avenue and is close to restaurants, retail, university, and diverse residential community. DESIGN CRITERIA:

To create an outdoor summer refuge in a pre-selected urban site. The design must implement sustainable and innovative strategies and materials; and address the following:

  1. SEATING

  2. SHADE

  3. RELATIONSHIP TO THE BUSY STREET

  4. BICYCLE PARKING

  5. USABLE SPACE FOR BUSKERS

  6. PET FRIENDLY CONSIDERATIONS

  7. DURABILITY FOR PUBLIC USE

  8. SAFETY AND VANDALISM

  9. MEET DESIGN-BUILD BUDGET OF $3000CAD

 

 

CITY OF EDMONTON CRITERIA:

  1. MINIMUM 4FT HEIGHT SEPARATION (I.E. FENCE OR WALL) BETWEEN THE URB PRK INSTALLATION AND VEHICULAR STREET. THE SEPARATION MUST COMPLIMENT OR BE INTEGRATED INTO THE DESIGN.

  2. DESIGN MUST MAINTAIN UNIMPEDED EGRESS FROM EXISTING SHOPS

  3. DESIGN MUST NOT CONTRAVENE WITH BYLAW 15894 AND ALBERTA BUILDING CODE (ABC)

  4. A FLUSH TRANSITION OR RAMP FROM THE CURB TO AVOID TRIPPING HAZARD

  5. STRUCTURE TO NOT IMPEDE SURFACE STORMWATER DRAINAGE FROM FLOWING ALONG THE STREET UNDERNEATH

  6. TO ENSURE VISIBILITY TO MOVING TRAFFIC AND PARKING CARS, URB PRK INSTALLATION MUST BE BUFFERED USING A WHEEL STOP AT A DESIRED DISTANCE OF 4FT FROM THE PARKLET.

  7. URB PRK INSTALLATION MUST BE HEAVY ENOUGH TO MAKE THEFT IMPOSSIBLE OR UNLIKELY.

  8. PARKLETS SHOULD USE A SLIP RESISTANT SURFACE TO MINIMIZE HAZARDS AND SHOULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO WHEELCHAIR USERS

  9. URB PRK INSTALLATION MUST HAVE A MINIMUM FLOOR BEARING OF 100LBS PER SQFT
