EMERGING YOUNG INDUSTRIAL DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE + PLANNING PROGRAM 

 

The Emerging Young Industrial Design, Architecture + Planning Program (EYIDAPP) was inititiated to provide an outlet for students and interns in Industrial Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Planning to showcase their creative talents and show to the community the importance of design and how it can be both clever and environmentally sustainable. Every year, URB PRK intends to hold a Design-Build Competition to create a summer refuge within a pre-selected urban context using innovative strategies and sustainable materials. These URB PRK installations are be open to the public for a span of 2 months with line-up of "buskers" designated on Saturdays from 5p-9p. The urban site is chosen based on the location of the local businesses who sponsor the event. The scale may vary from a parking stall to a courtyard to an entire block.

2017 EYIDAAP DESIGN-BUILD COMPETITION BRIEF:

PURPOSE:
To create an outdoor summer refuge along two empty parallel parking stalls on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta using sustainable and innovative strategies and materials.

TYPE OF COMPETITION: 

Urban Design | Parklet | The summer refuge will carefully address the context, seating, shade, relationship to the busy street, bicycle parking, usable space for buskers, and incorporate pet friendly features.

OBJECTIVE OF THE COMPETITION: 

To select a winning design proposal in which the chosen Design Team will then build and transport the installation to the selected site. The installation will be displayed for public use during the URB PRK event throughout July and August 2017.

 

SITE LOCATION: 

Two parallel parking stalls located in front of 10844 82 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta.

 

ELIGIBILITY: 

The majority of team members must be students and interns in:

  • Industrial Design

  • Architecture, 

  • Landscape Architecture, and 

  • Urban Planning. 

Design team may consist of a maximum of 8 persons, with the majority of the group representing the listed studies above. The other team members may represent a different discipline but must be a student or intern.

All team members must:​

  • be 18 years+

  • reside in Canada

  • able to build off-site

  • arrange for transportation and accommodation​
